Since its founding in 1972, Mummenschanz has captivated audiences around the world and brought a unique sense of excitement to theatre stages. The multi-award-winning Swiss company invites audiences on a journey woven with imagination and poetry in its special 50th-anniversary production, reviving some of the most beloved sketches from its half-century repertoire.
Founded in Paris in 1972, Mummenschanz has become one of the world’s leading representatives of contemporary mask theatre, transcending cultural and linguistic boundaries. Without uttering a single word, the company’s three founders-Floriana Frassetto, Andres Bossard and Bernie Schürch-conquered the world through an entirely visual language, using masks that appear to float against a black backdrop. Under the name Mummenschanz, they created a completely new and distinctive form within the performing arts.
Following the passing of Andres Bossard in 1992 and Bernie Schürch’s retirement in 2012, Floriana Frassetto has continued to serve as the primary artistic driving force behind the award-winning company. To celebrate Mummenschanz’s 50th anniversary, Frassetto conceived a special production that takes audiences on a journey through half a century of the company’s enchanting world.
The show brings some of Mummenschanz’s most beloved and successful creations from previous decades back to life. Iconic characters such as the legendary Clay Masks and Toilet Paper Faces return to the stage. “50 Years” also features delicate inflatable Giants, the Tube Creature, and many other extraordinary objects and forms brought to life by the company’s five performers. The production also includes sketches featuring surprising new forms and characters that reflect Mummenschanz’s unmistakable spirit.
