Elizabeth Costello at Paribu Art on November 18 & December 13
Elizabeth Costello, J. M. Coetzee makes a writer named Elizabeth Costello the central character, using her to explore the role of the intellectual, the relationship between the writer and their work, and a range of ethical questions. Is an intellectual responsible for becoming the scribe of the invisible, the voice of the silent? And what if a writer does not feel worthy of, or appointed to, such a task? What if this writer is without faith?
Adapted and directed by Saim Güveloğlu, Elizabeth Costello is a play about theatre itself. What can a stage tell us? Does it make room for great transformations, or does it simply offer a space for collective entertainment? Amidst all the complexities of our present moment, is it not possible to make a play that is simply aesthetically beautiful?
The production seeks to resist taking a definitive side or delivering a singular message, instead moving between different perspectives and allowing them to coexist.
