The Sisters of Mercy at Paribu Art on September 14

For more than four decades, The Sisters of Mercy (TSOM) have stood as an iconic force in underground music—defining, bending, and often rejecting the rules of countless rock subgenres. Their unique blend of punk psychedelia, metal, dance rhythms, and deep, gravelly vocals has captivated audiences for generations.

In November 2022, the band announced their first live performance in the United States since the George W. Bush era, headlining the Sick New World Festival in Las Vegas. Their enduring appeal quickly followed: a Los Angeles Palladium show sold out within 48 hours, leading to further announcements including a Las Vegas headline concert and a full US tour with additional Los Angeles dates.

Formed in Leeds in 1980, The Sisters of Mercy took their name from a Leonard Cohen song, while drawing early inspiration from artists such as David Bowie, Slade, and The Velvet Underground. Yet their closest sonic relatives are often considered to be The Stooges, Motörhead, and Suicide—whose influence helped shape the band’s distinct identity within post-punk.

Their 1987 album Floodland marked a major breakthrough, featuring enduring tracks such as “Dominion,” “Lucretia My Reflection,” and the epic “This Corrosion,” which still resonate on dance floors today. The 1990 release Vision Thing leaned into a heavier, more metal-influenced sound while preserving the band’s signature drum machine-driven intensity and lyrical ambiguity.

In the 1990s, frustration with the music industry led Andrew Eldritch to shift focus away from recording toward live performances. Although the band has not released a full-length album since Vision Thing, their influence and popularity have only grown over time, shaping countless acts across rock and alternative music.

Despite the absence of new studio albums, recent years have seen renewed creative energy. The band has introduced new material during live shows, receiving strong audience responses. These newer compositions are said to reflect both the strongest elements of their classic albums and a more contemporary edge—while remaining firmly committed to the band’s forward-looking ethos.
