Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek to Bring Timeless Melodies to a Contemporary Journey on December 13 at Paribu Art On December 13 at the Paribu Art stage, Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek brings melodies rising from the roots of Anatolia to Istanbul with a contemporary psychedelic interpretation. While staying faithful to their roots, the group pushes boundaries with their innovative spirit, re-echoing the sound of Anatolian music in today's world. Born in Hamburg to a Turkish family, Derya Yıldırım discovered bağlama at a young age, and this magical instrument remains at the center of her music today. Expanding her multi-instrumentalist identity, Derya revives folk standards like "Hop Bico" with her hypnotic vocals. The words "If you are singing an old folk song, you must add something new to it" summarize her artistic approach. Formed in 2014 after meeting French musicians Graham Mushnik and Antonin Voyant, Grup Şimşek reached its current form in 2021 with the addition of South African drummer Helen Wells. Describing themselves as an "outernational" collective, they blend timeless Anatolian melodies with modern psychedelic soul. To them, this music continues to be the voice of the people, minorities, and the oppressed. In 2024, signing with Big Crown Records, the group became even more visible on an international scale. Produced by Leon Michels (El Michels Affair) and recorded in New York, they released a powerful album that transcends genre boundaries, offering both deep emotional intensity and broad appeal. On December 13 at Paribu Art, Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek will deliver an unforgettable stage experience with music that is nourished by roots but speaks in a universal language.
