At 18, Mayer took the stage internationally with pianist Monty Alexander's group and performed alongside jazz legends like Dizzy Gillespie and Nina Simone. Moving to New York in the early 1990s, he worked across various genres and styles on the downtown avant-garde scene.
Known for his technique of reproducing electronic music rhythms on acoustic drums, Mayer founded the live electronic group Nerve in 1997. Modern Drummer magazine ranked him among the top 50 drummers of all time in 2014.
