One of the defining frontmen of modern indie rock, Berninger met his future bandmate Scott Devendorf while studying graphic design in Cincinnati. After a successful early career in advertising, he followed his creative instincts and, in his thirties, left everything behind to form The National.
With the band, he has released 10 studio albums and become one of indie rock’s most respected figures. The National has headlined major festivals, appeared on countless shows, and earned numerous award nominations. Alongside the band, he also formed the project EL VY with Brent Knopf in 2014, contributed to soundtracks including Game of Thrones and the film Cyrano, and released solo albums Serpentine Prison (2020) and Get Sunk (2025).
With his unmistakable baritone voice and deeply poetic songwriting, Matt Berninger has accompanied our loneliness, joy, heartbreak, and introspection for decades—becoming one of the most iconic voices of indie rock.
